Tommies extend two win streaks

Ben Podobinski had three hits and scored twice to lead St. Thomas to a 4-3 win over St. Mary's in the opener of Tuesday's MIAC baseball doubleheader. The games were moved from Winona to St. Paul due to field conditions so UST was the visitor on its own Koch Diamond.

Tim Kuzniar hit a three-run homer and an RBI triple in game two to lead a 13-5 win as the No. 13-ranked Tommies completed the sweep.

St. Thomas (19-5 overall, 8-0 MIAC) never trailed on the day as it pushed its season win streak to 10 and its home-field victory streak to 49. The Toms kept their one-game MIAC lead over St. Olaf (8-0), which swept Gustavus on Tuesday.

In the opener, freshman Caleb Fernholz pitched into the fifth inning and struck out five as he allowed two runs. Greg Clute pitched the last 2 1-3 innings for his second save. Podobinski tripled and scored on a Kelvin Stroik ground out. Stroik doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI ground out by Tyler Peterson. Jack Hogan had an RBI single. Kuzniar had a sacrifice fly.

In game two, Tyler Peterson had a pair of RBI doubles.
