Coners Drives in Three as @OW_Panthers Baseball Battles Manhattanville

PURCHASE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team lost an 11-6 non-conference decision on the road to the Manhattanville Valiants Wednesday afternoon from Manhattanville Field.  Old Westbury now stands at 6-13 on the season while Manhattanville climbs to 7-8.

Manhattanville jumped out to a quick two run advantage with solo runs over the opening frames.  Old Westbury's bats came alive in the third and fourth innings with RBI singles from both Kevin Licul and Joey Walsh in the third, and a Jacob Coners two-run double in the fourth to pull in front with a 4-2 lead. Old Westbury's lead was short lived as Manhattanville responded in the bottom of the fourth with four runs to regain a 6-4 advantage.  The Valiants added another run in the fifth to end Panther starter Frank DiMaria's outing.  Old Westbury scored in the sixth off a Coners RBI triple and then again in the seventh with Jonathan Pagancrossing the plate on a throwing error by catcher Eli Tsouristakis to pull within one run, 7-6.  Manhattanville sealed the deal in the bottom of the seventh with a solo run off reliever Christopher Vitale and then tacked on three more runs in the eighth beforeJames Wipperman retired the final two batters to escape out of the inning.

DiMaria (0-3) was pinned with the loss in five innings of service, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and one walk while fanning a season-best six batters.   

Conors produced his sixth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs to lead the Panther charge offensively. Walsh provided a spark, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases on the day.  Pagan also added his fifth multi-hit game of the season, hitting 2-for-5 with one run scored and three stolen bases.  Licul (1-4, RBI, BB) chipped in with two stolen bases as the Panthers held a 7-5 edge in thefts on the base path.    

Zack Zereva (2-0) was rewarded the win for his six innings of work, surrendering five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three.  

Jordanis Nunez shined for the Valiants, driving in going 4-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases.  Tsouristakis provided a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in another.  Robbie Lynch (2-3), Kevin Brady (2-5, RBI) and Kurt Hommen (2-3, 2 R) all produced multi-hit games.    

DREW RANGERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Thursday (April 3) for a non-conference road battle with the Drew Rangers at 3:30 p.m. in Madison, New Jersey.
