CLEVELAND – In a battle between two of the nation's top offenses, pitching ruled the day as the No. 7 Heidelberg University baseball team lost to No. 16 Case Western Reserve University, 2-1. The loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Student Princes.

Case's Kevin Johnstone fired a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits. Johnstone (4-2) walked four and fanned seven.

Heidelberg's Kyle Fluharty (6-1) allowed two unearned runs in six innings, picking up his first loss of the season. The junior from Willard struck out five, but issued five hits and three walks.

Relievers Ben Sniezek, Nick Reiter and Derek Hendrixson combined on three innings of scoreless relief.

The Spartans (27-8) took advantage of an error by Fluharty in the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded, Andrew Cain sent a weak bouncer between home and first. Fluharty bobbled the ball as he was attempting to throw home for the force. The miscue allowed Jordan Swisher to score.

Heidelberg (28-6) responded in the top of the fifth. Joe Staab and Arneal Squibb hit back-to-back two-out doubles to tie the game. Squibb had the only multi-hit game for the Tricolor.

In the sixth, a throwing error by Adam Hershberger on a sacrifice bunt allowed runners to advance to second and third. Jordan Dague followed with an RBI fielder's choice, plating Zach Tobias.

The Student Princes had a runner on second with two outs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, but failed to find the equalizer off of Johnstone.

Heidelberg returns home for Senior Day on Saturday. Head coach Matt Palm will recognize the careers of Karl Boedecker, Zach O'Driscoll, Squibb, Staab, Chris Thomas and Andrew Zenczak during a ceremony after the second game with Otterbein University. The first game will start at 1 p.m.
