Tommie sophomore just misses no-hitter

St. Thomas' Eric Veglahn came within one out of a seven-inning no-hitter, but the sophomore lefty settled for a complete-game one-hitter Saturday as the Tommies topped Carleton 7-1 in the opener of their conference baseball twinbill in Northfield.

Carleton won the nightcap 10-6 as it scored five unearned runs off six Tommie errors.

Willie Freimuth's two-out RBI triple in the seventh inning ended the no-hitter and the shutout. Veglahn struck out five and walked three as he improved to 5-0 on the season and 9-0 on his career.

No. 10-ranked St. Thomas (25-7 overall, 14-2 MIAC) kept its one-game lead over Bethel. The second-place Royals (13-3 MIAC) split Saturday at St. Olaf, winning 3-2 and losing 7-1.

The Tommies had 22 hits on the day and stranded nine runners in each game.

Tyler Peterson had three hits and Tim Kuzniar had two hits and two RBI in game one. Ben Podobinski and Jack Hogan each had two hits in game two. Zach Franz allowed just two runs in five-plus innings but took the loss.

Podobinski tripled in game two and became the first player in conference history to record nine triples in a season.

UST is scheduled to play a single nine-inning home game Sunday at noon against St. Scholastica, but the forecast of rain has put the game in jeopardy. Check Tommiesports.com on Sunday morning for the status of that game.

St. Thomas is scheduled to resume MIAC play Tuesday with two games against St. John's.
