Warhawks and Blue Devils Split Again

After splitting the first two games of the series on Saturday, UW-Whitewater and UW-Stout did it again on Sunday.  The Warhawks won game one 7-4 but lost game two 2-1 to move to 25-6 this season and 13-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Blue Devils are now 19-14 overall and 9-9 in the WIAC.

UW-W jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four-run third inning.  Four different players drove in a run including Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) when he hit his team leading fifth triple of the season.

Stout knocked one in on a single in the sixth to make it 4-1, but UW-W responded with three in the bottom of the frame.  Adam Gregory (Edgerton/Edgerton) drove in the first run on a single down the left field line, and Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) drove in the other two on a single up the middle.  All seven of UW-W's runs were scored with two outs.

The Blue Devils clawed back with three runs in the seventh to make it 7-4, but John Olejniczak (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) and Austin Jones (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West) combined to pitch the final two and two-thirds and stifled any hint of a rally.  Each relief pitcher gave up just one hit and Jones earned the save, his second of the season.  Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic) earned the win to move to 6-1 this year.

Game two was a pitcher's duel.  The Warhawks manufactured a run in the third on back-to-back singles after a leadoff double to make it 1-0, but the scoreboard went quiet until the ninth.  Blue Devil right fielder Ryan Freitag blasted his eleventh homerun of the season to lead off the ninth and tie the game at one.  With two outs the Warhawks made a couple of costly mistakes that led to UW-Stout scoring the go-ahead run.  There was no walk-off magic for UW-W as they went on to drop game two.

There were just 11 hits in game two, compared to 24 in game one.  Besides the two innings where each team scored, only one runner made it past third base in the game.  Kellen Pearson earned the win for Stout throwing the final three innings and giving up just one hit.

Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood) and Adam Gregory (Edgerton/Edgerton) led UW-W with four hits each.  Gregory added three runs and an RBI while Haen chipped in one run and one RBI.

UW-W will host UW-Oshkosh Wednesday, April 30 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
