Stevens: Baseball Reaches 20 Wins with Another Sweep of Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (April 28, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball program reached the 20-win plateau for the third consecutive season with an Empire 8 Conference sweep of Utica College for the second straight day. Stevens is currently on a seven-game winning streak and lifts its record to 20-10 on the year.

Over the four games at Utica, the Ducks outscored the Pioneers, 30-5, and pounded out 17 more hits, 42-25. On the hill, the Stevens hurlers struck out 44 batters.

The seven-game winning streak for the Ducks is the longest such streak since the 2010 team won nine consecutive contests.

Game One: Stevens 9, Utica 2 (9 innings)

Stevens plated seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to prevail in extras in Game One. The Ducks scored six of their seven runs in the frame with two outs while hitting most of the inning with the bases loaded.

Sophomore Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) highlighted the ninth-inning barrage with a two-run double that brought senior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and sophomore Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) home. Toro recorded two hits and an RBI in the inning as well.

The Ducks struck first in the opener in their first at bat on a ground out by sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) to bring in junior Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.). Utica took the lead in its first hacks of the game with a pair of runs and remained ahead until Stevens scored again in the fifth inning on an unearned run. Junior Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) scored on a throwing error off the bat of Yano.

Sophomore southpaw Greg Jakusik (The Woodlands, Texas) struck out 11 batters in a no decision over seven innings pitched. Jakusik allowed seven hits and five walks but gave up just one earned run.

Classmate Daniel McIntyre (Lakeway, Texas) picked up the win in two innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts and gave up just one hit.

Game Two: Stevens 7, Utica 1

The Ducks pounded out 13 hits in the nightcap and five batters collected two apiece. Stevens scored a run in the second, three in the third, two in the sixth and one more in the ninth. Utica's lone run came in the bottom of the third.

Toro, Allen, Yano, Sieber and junior Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) each picked up two hits in Game Two. Allen paced the offense with two RBI, while Toro scored twice. Yano and Sieber each scored a run and drove another in, while Nickels had one RBI.

On the bases, Toro stole three bags, while Allen swiped two and Yano had one.

Hennelly batted 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks, while freshman Bret Viola (Carmel, N.Y.) walked twice, drove in one, scored another and went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Junior Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) fanned six batters in five innings of work for the win. Boardman allowed seven hits and a walk with just one earned run.

Senior Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) and sophomore Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, N.Y.) each tossed two hitless innings in relief. Patterson struck out one, while Poinsett posted an unblemished stat line.

Stevens is back in action for a CUNYAC doubleheader at Lehman College on April 30 beginning at 5 p.m. The Ducks will then travel to St. John Fisher College for their regular season finale for a four-game series in Rochester on May 3 and 4.
