William Paterson Baseball Falls in NJAC Tournament Opener, 4-0

CAMDEN, N.J. – Sixth-seeded William Paterson (13-20-1, 7-10-1 NJAC) dropped a 4-0 decision at top-seeded and 29th-ranked Rutgers-Camden (28-9-1, 14-4 NJAC) in the first round of the double-elimination New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament April 29.

The Pioneers will play at fifth-seeded The College of New Jersey (20-17, 8-10 NJAC) in an elimination game Thursday, May 1, at 3:30 p.m.

The Scarlet Raptors pushed across a run when freshman designated hitter Joe Brooks started the fourth inning with a walk and was doubled in by junior first baseman Connor Hall.

Rutgers-Camden added three more in the sixth. Senior right fielder Adrian Gonzalez singled and Hall drew a base on balls before a sacrifice moved the runners up 90 feet. An error allowed Gonzalez to cross the plate, another fielder's choice plated Hall, and a Brett Tenuto RBI-single made it a 4-0 game.

Sophomore left fielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), sophomore shortstop K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and senior designated hitter Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) accounted for WP's three hits.

Senior Anthony DeEsposito (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts and four walks during 5.0 innings (3-2). Junior Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) tossed the final 3.0 innings, surrendering two unearned runs, a hit and two walks while striking out a pair.

Hall was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored for Rutgers-Camden. Junior Ron Reagan improved to 7-3, striking out four and scattering three hits over 8.0 innings. Sophomore Kyle Gaff walked one and struck out two during 1.0 inning of work.
