More news about: Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. -  Transylvania University bookended a pair of big offensive rallies on the front and back ends of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series opener against Manchester University Friday, May 2.

Despite the loss to open Senior Weekend 2014 at Gratz Field, the Black and Gold received good news from two fronts.

The first arrived soon after the game concluded as second-place Anderson University was overcome by a late rally from Earlham 5-4. The loss sewed up MU's sixth overall HCAC title and third in the last four years as well as hosting duties for the 2014 HCAC postseason tournament.

The second came in the form of multiple-hit contests from junior shortstop Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.), junior center fielder Kyle Norris (Indianapolis, Ind.), senior designated hitter Dan Maringer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.). Maringer led the quartet with four hits, a double and two RBIs.

Transylvania (17-21 overall, 11-13 HCAC) got out of the gates fast with six hits during a five-run first. MU (23-14 overall, 17-6 HCAC) answered right back with four in the first highlighted by a two-run single from senior right fielder Ryne Lehrman (Hoagland, Ind.) who finished with three RBIs. The home side tied it with a single run in the third, but TU managed single runs in the fifth and seventh to hold a 7-6 edge into the ninth. From there, they took advantage of a combined five walks and hit batsmen, including four hits, to plate eight runs en route to a 15-8 win.

MU's Senior Weekend set with Transylvania resumes Saturday, May 3. A pair of nine-inning contests begins at 12 p.m.

NOTES – Maringer and junior second baseman Logan Hug (Indianapolis, Ind.) each resumed impressive streaks. The senior's three-hit effort upped his on-base string to 16 straight games, while Hug moved his hitting streak to 10 contests in a row.
