Warhawks Clinch WIAC Title with Wins Over Superior

The UW-Whitewater baseball team clinched their 15th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in school history with a doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior Saturday at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater.  The Warhawks run-ruled the Yellowjackets in game one winning 15-5 in eight innings.  The second game was much closer as UW-W prevailed 11-9.  The Warhawks, ranked fourth in the country by D3baseball.com, currently stand at 29-6 overall and 17-4 in WIAC play.  UW-S is 17-16 overall and 8-12 in league play.

The Warhawks scored multiple runs in five of the eight innings in game one.  They opened up scoring for both teams with a four-run second.  The Yellowjackets countered with four in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.  UW-W posted another four runs in the third and never looked back.  They went on to score seven more unanswered runs after the third inning.

UW-W tallied 15 hits in game one as Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere), Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) and Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) notched three apiece.  Gonzalez added five runs and two RBIs.

Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic) earned the win in game one to improve to 7-1 this season.  Liston boasts and ERA of 2.83 and has struckout 45 batters in 47.2 innings of work.

Game two started with the Yellowjackets taking a 3-0 lead after one.  Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) and Adam Gregory (Edgerton/Edgerton) led off the next inning with back-to-back doubles and Warhawks inched closer at 3-1.  Two batters later Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine) doubled and the Warhawks cut into the lead 3-2.  Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) singled to drive in two and give the Warhawks a 4-3 lead.

Superior tied things up in the bottom of the third and both teams went scoreless in the fourth.  The Warhawks took a momentary 6-4 lead in the top of the fifth but Superior notched three in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead 7-6.

Power ripped a bases loaded triple to left center in the top of the sixth to give UW-W a 9-7 lead and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly to make it 10-7.

Superior loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs and head coach John Vodenlich turned to righty Andrew Lowe (Whiting, IN/Whiting) to get them out of the jam.  Lowe allowed one run on a sacrifice fly but got the next two batters out to end the threat.

Each team scored a run in the seventh to bring the final to 11-9.  Lowe pitched innings sixth through nine to earn the win, his first of the season.

The teams combined for 30 hits and 20 runs in game two.  Friend and Gregory each notched three hits in the second game and Power recorded three runs and three RBIs.  Power and Gregory led UW-W offensively on Saturday totaling nine hits, eight runs, and eight RBIs between the two.

UW-W has been dominant in the 2000's winning 11 of 15 conference titles.  Because the Warhawks won the regular season title, they have earned the number one seed and the right to host the WIAC tournament next weekend.

The Warhawks and Yellowjackets will face-off in another doubleheader Sunday at Prucha Field beginning at noon.
