Rowan wins second consecutive NJAC title

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won its second straight New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship with a 7-5 victory over Montclair State University on Sunday.
 
The second-seeded Profs (32-8) claimed their 16th NJAC title and receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The third-seeded Red Hawks have a 22-17 record.
 
Right-hander Johnny Dunn (jr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) pitched eight innings to earn the win. He (2-1) allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out five. Left-hander Ryan Sharkey (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Mary) got the final out for his first save. Lefty Michael Macchia (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) suffered the loss. He (5-3) went 4.2 innings and gave up seven runs, three earned and 12 hits.
 
Right fielder Ryan Pavlik (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) went three for five. He scored one time and knocked in a run. Center fielder Eric Perez (sr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) had three hits (five at bats) with a double and two runs scored. Catcher Connor Grant (sr. Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) was two for five with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and left fielder Nick Kreiger (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) each crossed the plate one time.
 
For Montclair State, center fielder Philip Scott (fr. Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) went two for four with a double and one RBI. Designated hitter Jayson Stolz (sr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) had two hits (three at bats) and scored one run. Third baseman Connor Abreu (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway), second baseman Lou Martini (sr. Flemington, NJ/North Hunterdon), first baseman Christopher Reynolds (jr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and shortstop Cody Pace (sr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) each drove in one run. Right fielder Ryan Long (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) scored twice, while pinch runner Matt Long (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) and Pace both scored one time.
 
Montclair State took the lead in the first inning on a RBI single by Reynolds. Ryan Long scored on the play. The Profs went ahead with three runs in the second. Grant plated Perez with a double to left field then came home on an error. Kreiger also scored on a miscue. The Red Hawks cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third. Scott singled through the left side and Ryan Long crossed the plate. Montclair State tied the game in the fourth. Pace hit a RBI single to bring in Stolz. Rowan regained the lead with four runs in the fifth. Grant had a base hit that scored McMenamin and Pavlik singled in Perez. Grant and Pavlik then both scored on an error. The Red Hawks added two runs in the ninth with a RBI single by Abreu and a sacrifice fly by Martini.
