Toms close out 18-2 conference run

No. 12-ranked St. Thomas slapped 23 hits on the day in Sunday's 6-3, 11-1 MIAC baseball doubleheader sweep of Augsburg at Minneapolis' Parade Stadium.

The Tommies (29-7 overall, 18-2 MIAC) secured the program's 12th consecutive regular-season conference title. Five pitchers combined to hold the Auggies to one earned run over 16 innings. 

In game one, the Tommies were outhit 12-8 but capitalized on four Augsburg middle-infield errors en route to an early 5-0 lead. J.D. Dorgan had a sac fly and in the last inning doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Eric Veglahn improved to 6-0 on the season as he allowed one run in 5 1-3 innings.

In game two, freshmen Caleb Fernholz (6 1-3 innings) and Bill Ferderer (1 2-3 innings) and soph Matt Behounek combined on a four-hitter with seven strikeouts that helped offset nine walks. UST's 15-hit attack was paced by three-hit games by Tyler Peterson, Ben Podobinski and Dorgan.

Kuzniar ran his hit streak to 13 games, while Peterson extended his to 11. Kuzniar has had a hit or RBI in 19 games in a row; Podobinski has a hit or a run in 14 games in a row; Dorgan has a hit, walk or RBI in 17 games in a row. 

 

St. Thomas has won either the MIAC regular-season or playoff crown in each of the last 19 seasons. Coach Chris Olean's team will make the program's 15th appearance in the 15-year history of the MIAC playoffs next weekend in Minnetonka, coming in again as the top seed for the four-team, double-elimination event. 

UST plays one nine-inning game Monday at home at 4 p.m. against Northwestern-St. Paul. The Toms' 15-man senior class will be honored after the game.
