Warhawks Wrap WIAC with Sweep of Superior

The Warhawks concluded their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season with a doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior Sunday at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater.  UW-W also capped a series sweep of the Yellowjackets as they topped UW-S twice on Saturday.  The Warhawks won game one 10-6 with a four-run ninth, and shutout the visitors 15-0 in game two.  UW-W, the 2014 WIAC champion, improves to 31-6 overall and 19-4 in the WIAC.  Superior concludes their season with a 17-18 overall record and 8-14 in league play.

The way game one started you would have never thought it would come down to the ninth inning.  The Warhawks scored two runs in the top of the first just three batters into the game.  A suicide squeeze by Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) made it 3-0 in favor of the Warhawks after three and a half.

UW-Superior's first four batters of the fourth reached safely before UW-W could record an out and the  Yellowjackets went on to score four in the inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine) launched his first homerun of the year in the top of the sixth to tie the game at four, but UW-S regained the lead in the bottom of the frame on a two-RBI double by Seguru Homma.

A run in the seventh and another in the eighth tied the game once again, this time at six, and a four-run ninth pushed the Warhawks to victory.  Cannon came through again with a bases loaded single that scored two and Adam Gregory (Edgerton/Edgerton) did the same later in the inning to make it 10-6.

Austin Jones (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West) came on in the fifth in relief of Connor Hurst (Waunakee/Waunakee) and finished the game to earn the win, his fourth of the season.  Jones gave up three hits and two runs in four and two-thirds.

Game two was essentially over after the first inning.  The Warhawks had seven batters in a row reach base highlighted by a bases loaded double by Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central).  UW-W was up 6-0 after one.

And the runs kept coming ... two more in the second, the third, and the fourth, and another three in the fifth.  All without Superior scoring a single run.

UW-W went on to win the second game 15-0 in seven innings due to the ten-run rule.

Justin Mortensen (Hartland/Arrowhead) earned the win for the Warhawks, his first of the year, scattering eight hits across seven innings.

Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) and Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) each tallied five hits in the doubleheader.  Kuhlmann notched three doubles and four runs scored while Pierce added five RBIs and three runs.  Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine), normally a designated hitter, played left field and went 4-for-8 with six RBIs and four runs scored.  The Warhawks totaled 29 hits and 25 runs on Sunday with seven Warhawks collecting three or more hits.

UW-W will travel to Mequon, Wisconsin on Monday to play against Concordia (WI) for their final regular season games.  The Warhawks will host the WIAC tournament beginning Friday, May 9 at 10 am and continuing through Saturday.  The winner of the WIAC tournament earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.
