Warhawks Win Pitcher's Duel

With both teams on the brink of their respective conference tournaments, the head coaches knew it might be best to save some arms and pitch by committee.  Concordia (WI) used six pitchers and the Warhawks used five, but both staffs were solid, allowing just four hits to each team.  The Warhawks scored three runs in the third and that was the difference as UW-W went on to defeat CUW 3-0 Monday at Kapco Park in Mequon, Wisconsin.  The Warhawks wrap up regular season play with a 32-6 record overall.  The Falcons fall to 20-17.

Scott Plaza (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect) pitched the first four innings for the Warhawks and gave up just one hit while striking out five.  Joel Sharon and Tyler Adams split the first four innings for Concordia and neither gave up a single hit.

The Warhawks finally broke into the hit column in the fifth, but just once.  Then in the sixth, UW-W got their offense going, at least temporarily.  Ben Kuhlmann, Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington), and Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) strung together three straight singles to give UW-W a 1-0 lead.  A sacrifice fly by Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) made it 2-0 and another sacrifice fly by Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) made it 3-0.  That was it for UW-W; no more runs or hits the rest of the way.  It didn't matter because the UW-W pitching staff continued to be solid.  Donnie Manke (Lodi/Lodi) threw innings four through seven and allowed just two hits while Mike Nompleggi (Oconto Falls/Oconto Falls), John Olejniczak (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) and Austin Finn (Oconomowoc/Kettle Moraine) finished the final two innings giving up just one hit between the three of them.

Manke earned the win, his first of the season.  He has made eight appearances this season and boasts a 3.60 ERA.

UW-W's 32 wins is ranked ninth most in school history.  Their six losses are currently the least.  At this time only four teams in the country have less losses than UW-W.

This is the conclusion of the regular season for UW-Whitewater, the regular season champion in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Warhawks will go on to host UW-Stout in the first game of the WIAC tournament Friday at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater at 10 am.  The winner of the conference tournament receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III championship.
