York, Pa. (5/6/14) – Senior Joe O'Connor blasted a grand slam on his way to collecting six RBI as the Kean University baseball team outslugged York College (Pa.) by the final of 11-8 Tuesday afternoon.

O'Connor recorded three hits on the day as four Cougars also picked up multiple hits on the day as the team crossed the 30 win plateau for the 10th straight season.

Trailing 6-4 entering the sixth inning, sophomore Ryan Reitmeyer led off the frame with a base hit.  After swiping second, he was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from senior Nick Zucchero.  Sophomore Ryan Kelley delivered with an RBI single in the gap.  Later in the inning with two outs, senior Tyler Smarslok reached via hit-by-pitch to put runners on first and second.  Sophomore Matt Meleo tied the game with an RBI single to center and classmate Sal Taormina kept the inning alive after reaching on an error to load the bases.  That set up O'Connor who broke the deadlock in a big way by clearing the bases with one shot on an 0-2 pitch, his third of the season.

Kean took an early 2-0 lead in the first as back-to-back singles by Smarslok and Meleo started the game.  O'Connor registered his first RBI of the day with a single and junior Andy Lopez used a perfectly placed bunt to bring in another for a quick 2-0 advantage.

That lead was short lived as the Spartans even the score right up in their next at-bat with two runs on three hits, including what would be their only extra-base hit of the day, a leadoff double.  York (26-13) then took the lead with a four run second inning, backed by four hits.

Smarslok helped chip away the deficit as he recorded a two out, two RBI bases loaded single in the fourth.

Southpaw Dan Hansen picked up the win in relief.  Hansen (2-1) tossed six innings allowing two runs and six hits.  He struck out six and walked just one.

Offensively Smarslok, Meleo and Kelley each had two hits on the day.  Smarslok and Kelley each scored twice, with Meleo crossing the plate three times.

Kean finishes off the regular season on Thursday when they host Farmingdale State College.
