Stevens: Jayson Yano Tosses Four-Hit Shutout in CUNYAC Semis

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (May 8, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team needed just one-hour and 50 minutes to complete a 3-0 shutout win against the College of Staten Island in a CUNYAC semifinal game at MCU Park on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) tossed a four-hit complete game with six strikeouts. Yano also scored once, drove in another and stole a base. He produced 15 groundball outs in his stellar pitching performance.

The Ducks only saw 11 pitches through two innings from Staten Island starter Mike Fitzpatrick and notched one base hit on a single from sophomore Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.). Every out recorded by the Dolphins were via ground out.

In the top of the third, Stevens placed its first two runners on with a single from junior Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) and a hit by pitch to senior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.). Yano attempted a sacrifice bunt, but the Dolphins pulled off a double play at second and third. With two outs, Yano stole second and then sophomore Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) doubled to right field to bring Yano home for the first run of the game.

Staten Island notched its first hit to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning and picked up another two batters later. The Dolphins had runners on first and third with one out but ended their scoring threat after a runner was tagged out on a steal attempt.

The Dolphins threatened again in the sixth with back-to-back singles which led to runners on second and third, but Yano struck out the final batter looking to preserve the Ducks' 1-0 advantage.

Stevens had a chance to score in the seventh after junior Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) stroked a one-out double down the leftfield line, but he was left stranded.

In the eighth, the Ducks put two runs up on a laser triple to centerfield by Allen that plated Toro and then Allen scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Yano. Toro began the inning with an error, moved up to second on a bunt and stole third.

Staten Island walked to start the eighth, but Yano tossed a pair of groundball outs – one a double play – to keep his shutout intact.

Both teams went down in order in the ninth inning and the Ducks move onto the CUNYAC Championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. They will face the winner of Staten Island and Baruch College which takes place at 7 p.m. tonight.
