Austin, Texas – There would be no late inning magic this time for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team as the Cru fell to Concordia Texas 6-1 in a winner's bracket game of the American Southwest Conference Tournament Thursday in Austin. UMHB falls to 26-16 on the year with the loss. The Tornados improve to 29-12 on the year with the victory.
Concordia jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Kyle Rodriguez's RBI single in the top of the first inning. The Cru tied the game when Rob Loewe doubled, moved to third on Zack Whiddon's single and scored on a double play in the bottom of the fourth. The Tornados grabbed a 2-1 lead on Colton Poindexter's sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but left two runners on base in that frame. Trevor Harlos' RBI single in the top of the eighth provided an insurance run for Concordia and the Tornados added three more in the top of the ninth. Connor Bertsch's solo homer and RBI singles from Gareth Hutton and Cole Calder did the damage. UMHB loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on singles from Loewe, Chase Burrow and Justin Dingman but could not push across a run.
Seth Barrow took the loss for the Cru to drop to 2-1. Cameron Cox threw a complete-game, nine-hitter to move to 8-3 for Concordia. Burrow and Loewe had two hits apiece for UMHB in the game. Bertsch had three of the Tornados 11 hits in the game.
UMHB will face Sul Ross State in an elimination game tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM. CTX advances to a winner's bracket game against the U.T.-Dallas/LeTourneau University winner tomorrow at 4:00 PM.
