#q Webster Powers Its Way Into SLIAC Finals, 10-2, Over Greenville

The #1 ranked Webster University baseball team advanced to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament finals, defeating Greenville College, 10-2, on May 9 at Glik Park in Highland, IL.  Two first inning Gorlok home runs and a five-run fifth paced the Webster offense, and Chris Jansen picked up his fifth win on the mound.

Greenville tagged Jansen (JR, Cicero, IN/Bishop Chatard HS) for a two-run homer in the top of the first, but Webster responded with two round-trippers in bottom half.  Ryan Hall (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Eureka HS) hit a solo shot with one down, his fifth of the year.

Joe Winckel (SR, Bonne Terre, MO/North County HS) followed a Taylor Stoulp (SR, St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's HS) walk with a two-run blast.  For Winckel it was his sixth home run and RBIs 45 and 46, and Webster led, 3-2.

The Gorloks broke the game open in the fourth.  Charlie Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS), Kevin Kojs (SR, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central HS) and Ian Foege (SR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS), were all hit by pitches to load the bases.

A Matt Wollnik (FR, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) single, Corey Lasky (SR, Vernon Hills, IL/Adlai E Stevenson HS) sac fly, Stoulp single, Winckel single, and Kammer single plated five to extend the Gorlok lead to 8-2.  Webster picked up two more runs in the seventh, to pad the lead to 10-2.

Jansen went six innings, allowing three hits, one walk, two runs, while striking out five.  He improves to 4-1 on the season.  Freshman Matt Goro (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS) took over in the seventh inning and had five strikeouts in his two scoreless innings of work.  Jason Gray (SR, St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) threw a scoreless ninth.

Winckel was 2-3, with a home run, three RBIs, a walk and a run.  Stoulp was 2-3, with two runs, two walks, and an RBI.  Wollnik was 2-4, with two RBIs and a run scored, and Hall was 1-5, with the home run and an RBI.

Webster will now face the winner of the Spalding/Greenville semi-final in the finals on May 10 at Glik Park, tentatively at 1:00 p.m.
