NEWARK, N.Y. (May 17, 2014) – The historic 2014 season for the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team came to an end on Saturday with a 6-2 loss to Farmingdale State College in the Division III New York Regional at Colburn Park. With the loss, Stevens ends its season with a 27-15 overall record.

Farmingdale State scored one run in the top of the first on a wild pitch with two outs. The Rams' lead off runner reached on a single, stole second and was sacrificed over to third.

Stevens had its chance to tie it up or take the lead in the bottom of the first with two runners in scoring position and one out. Sophomore Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) and junior Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) both walked and stole a base before the Ducks were retired on two pop outs and a strikeout.

In the top of the second, Farmingdale extended its lead to 3-0 on back-to-back base hits to right field. The first came on a bloop double that fell in front of a diving Hennelly and the ensuing batter dropped one right over freshman Harrison Kaye (North Brunswick, N.J.) at second base.

Senior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) doubled with two outs in the third but was stranded there after a potential base hit in the left-center gap off the bat of sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) was snagged by Farmingdale's centerfielder.

Another run crossed the plate for Farmingdale on a passed ball in the fourth. The Rams once again played small-ball after an infield single led off the frame. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner up and a walk was issued to the next hitter. After another sac bunt put both runners in scoring position, the passed ball occurred.

Stevens' deficit increased to 5-0 on a sacrifice fly in the fifth after a bunt base hit and two-base error moved runners to second and third with no outs.

The Ducks chipped away in the bottom of the fifth with their first run of the game. Kaye led off with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Farmingdale's throw to third on the second wild pitch got away from its third baseman which allowed Kaye to score.

Kaye scored another run in the seventh after he led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Toro drove Kaye in on a base hit down the left field line to get the Ducks back to within three runs at 5-2, but that was the closest they would get.

Farmingdale got the run back in the top of the eighth on a throwing error while the Ducks defense attempted to turn a double play.

Stevens threatened in the bottom of the ninth with two runners on, but a diving catch by Farmingdale's leftfielder ended the contest with both runners on the move.

Sophomore Robert Robbins (Tallahassee, Fla.) took the loss for Stevens on the mound in four inning of work. Robbins allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks. He also struck out four batters.

Seniors Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) and Matt Buccheri (Little Silver, N.J.) finished off the game in relief. Poinsett tossed four innings and allowed two runs (no earned) on four hits. Buccheri threw a perfect ninth inning.
