Senior J.D. Dorgan had four hits and drove in six runs and senior Ben Podobinski had four hits and scored three as No. 6-ranked St. Thomas recorded a 14-8 win over DePauw in Saturday's pivotal winners' bracket game at the NCAA regional in Moline, Ill.
The Tommies (36-7) won their 11th consecutive game, including their current 6-0 postseason run, and have also captured 27 of their last 29 games. They advance to Sunday's championship round where they can win the regional with either a 1-0 or 1-1 record.
They play a noon game against the surviving team from the losers' bracket. A Tommie loss would force a 3 p.m. rematch for the title.
The Tommies' first five hitters combined to go 15-of-22 on Saturday with 12 RBI and four walks. Dorgan recorded his 20th career home run during the ninth inning.
Senior Tim Kuzniar went 3-for-4 and drove in four, and soph Waylon Bemboom was 3-for-4 with two walks. In his three NCAA playoff games since he was given the starting nod at DH, Bemboom is 8-for-13 with two walks and has scored five runs.
The Toms have collected 143 hits for an average of 13 a contest over their current 11-game win streak.
DePauw, which took its first region loss, erased an early 8-0 deficit and pulled within 8-5 in the sixth inning, but UST regained the momentum with a four-run seventh inning.
Senior starter Steve Maher allowed four runs in the first four innings. Freshman Caleb Fernholz allowed no earned runs in two innings of middle relief to take the victory. Senior Tommy Danczyk worked three innings and allowed one earned run and took his ninth save of the season.
DePauw (25-20) plays a 7 p.m. Saturday game against the Rose-Hulman vs. Buena Vista victor. The 7 p.m. winner must beat the Tommies twice on Sunday to claim the title and take the berth into next weekend's D-III College World Series.
