Moline, Ill. - DePauw's Michael Chiaro and Rose-Hulman's Daniel Sutherland locked up in a pitcher's duel in tonight's NCAA Division III Regional elimination game and it was the Engineers who scored an unearned run and advanced to Sunday's championship game with a 1-0 victory over the Tigers.
DePauw's season came to a close as the Tigers finished 25-21, while the Engineers improved to 28-17. The Tigers closed the season with 13 wins in the last 18 contests after losing to Rose-Hulman on April 24.
Chiaro retired the first seven hitters he faced and only two Engineers reached base in the first four innings.
The Tigers put two runners on base with one out in the second as Brendon Pashia singled and Connor Einertson walked, but a fly out and fielder's choice ended the inning.
The lone scoring of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when Rose-Hulman engineered a run as Andrew Benitez reached on an error and moved to second on Zach Trusk's sacrifice bunt. Benitez moved to third when Kevin Jendra flied out to right and scored on PatrickKlima's single to right.
DePauw's last threat came in the seventh when Pashia singled to lead off the frame and pinch-hitter Ryan Hurston was hit by a pitch with two outs. A fly out ended the inning.
Sutherland retired the final seven batters he faced to pick up the win.
Pashia had two of DePauw's three hits, while four different Engineers collected one apiece.
Chiaro finished at 0-5 after not allowing an earned run while striking out four with no walks in eight innings to match his longest collegiate outing.
Sutherland improved to 5-1 with the three-hit shutout. The Engineers' pitchers tossed 21 consecutive scoreless innings today after blanking Buena Vista over the final 12 in the previous game.
