Middle Innings Doom Hornets as LC Falls to McMurry 10-1
FAYETTEVILLE, NC – McMurry University plated all 10 of its runs in the fourth through sixth innings to keep the Lynchburg College baseball team winless with a 10-1 victory in the Methodist Diamond Invitational on Sunday.
Lynchburg looked on pace for its first win of the season through three innings as the pitching of Trevor Martin held down the War Hawks and the bats did just enough to move in front.
Jonathan Munn continued his strong start to the season, smashing a solo homer to lead off the second inning. He has now collected hits in each of LC's three games thus far while hitting at a .400 clip.
Martin faced just six batters in the first two innings before McMurry showed signs of life at the plate in the third.
Following a Joel Villarreal single, Christian Simmons connected on a ball to left with two outs in the bottom of the frame to advance Villarreal to third base, but Martin struck out Patrick Adams to end the threat.
Martin induced a groundout to start the fourth but a costly fielding error put Mikal Hunter on first. Ben Douglas doubled home Hunter to tie up the game and later scored on a Zach Hagan homer to left, putting the War Hawks up 3-1 through four frames.
McMurry hit the first two pitchers out of the Hornet bullpen before Michael Day, Nick Trio and Zack Engelmann silenced the War Hawks late in the contest, but the damage was done.
Day, Trio and Engelmann combined for four innings of work, allowing one unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Joe Rogers was the only Hornet with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 from the two-spot in the order.
Simmons had three hits for McMurry (4-3) while Cody Howard, Douglas and Hagan each drove in a pair of runs. Lanny Zier pitched seven one-run innings for his second win of the season.
Lynchburg (0-3) travels to the Emory Tournament on Friday to face Rhodes College (1-1) at 2 p.m. The Hornets will also face Emory University (0-0) and Saint Joseph's (Me.) (0-0) over the course of the weekend.
