No. 18 Panthers open season with 10-1 win against Schreiner

JACKSON, Miss.—The 18th-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team opened the 2015 season this evening in Jackson, Miss., facing Schreiner University at Twenty Field. It was the season opener for both squads.

BSC got things started with one run in the top of the first when junior Matt Brown scored on a wild pitch. The 1-0 lead stood until the top of the third when, with no outs, an RBI single by Jacob Mayfield plated Brown. Junior Taylor McCracken scored on an RBI fielder's choice by sophomoreSam Roberts, and Mayfield and Roberts scored on a double from senior David Bourbonnais to increase the lead to 5-0.

The Panthers scored the rest of their runs all in the top of the fifth. A Roberts RBI ground-out plated Mayfield, followed by a sacrifice fly-out from sophomore Jack Rhodes to bring Mayfield across the plate. Sophomore David Scott RBI singled up the middle to score Bourbonnais, and Brown hit a two-RBI double down the right field line to plate Scott and senior Brandon Marino, putting BSC up 10-0.

Schreiner scored its lone run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Marco Carreo.

Senior Blake Stevens started on the mound and threw five innings, striking out eight batters while giving up two hits. Sophomore Stephen Himic pitched the next three innings, giving up four hits and one run, and junior Miller Bonds threw the final inning.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, facing University of the Ozarks at 2 p.m.
