The Louisiana College baseball team registered their biggest non-conference win in several years on Saturday, as they upset #16 Trinity University 7-6 on Saturday afternoon in Tyler, Texas as part of the Clements Fluids Classic at the University of Texas at Tyler.
As he has done throughout the early part of the Wildcats' season, LC was carried at the plate by senior catcher Garrett Parsons, who went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and his third home run of the young season.
The Wildcats would jump on the board first in the top of the second inning, when senior designated hitter Shea Ourso launched a two-run homer off Trinity starter Trevor Griffin to put LC ahead early 2-0.
Trinity would bounce back with a single run in the bottom half of the second, but LC answered immediately with a two run third inning, highlighted by an RBI double to left centerfield by Parsons that put LC out front 4-1.
Parsons extended the LC lead yet again in the top of the fifth inning when he sent yet another pitch sailing over the wall to put the Cats out front 6-1, his third long ball of the season so far through just four games.
But Trinity was relentless, and an Austin Singer solo home run in the bottom of the fifth was followed by a Jose Santos three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and a Drew Butler RBI single in the seventh to tie the game up at 6-6 after seven complete innings.
But it was Ourso, a converted pitcher, who would once again give LC the boost they needed, as his RBI single in the top of the eighth inning gave LC the lead 7-6.
LC would hand the ball to their bullpen from there, as Tripp Davis came into the game in the seventh inning and registered 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball before handing the ball to senior closer Lane Noakes, who shut down the Trinity bats in the ninth inning to pick up his first career save and secure the upset win for the Wildcats.
Davis would get the win, his first of the season. LC redshirt sophomore Bo Ockman was solid in his first start for the Wildcats, going 5.2 innings while giving up five hits and striking out seven.
The loss for Trinity was the first of the 2015 season, while LC moves to 2-2 on the year. The Wildcats will take on in-state NAIA opponent Loyola University on Monday in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
