Behind a solid starting effort from sophomore Hans Hansen, the Emory University Baseball team moved to 2-0 with a key early-season regional win over Rhodes College at the Emory University Tournament at Chappell Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
The win, in a rematch of a pair of games from last year's NCAA South Regional, gives the Eagles their third 2-0 start in the last four seasons. Rhodes dropped to 4-2 with the loss.
Hansen allowed just a pair of hits through six and two-thirds innings, surrendering just a pair of runs (only one earned), while striking out five. The right-handed pitcher retired 11-straight batters between the third and seventh innings, en route to earning the victory.
After the game went scoreless through the first three-and-a-half innings, the Eagles broke through in the bottom of the fourth, when senior Brett Lake singled, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Emory added a second run in the frame on a two-out double from junior Chris Slivka, and then tacked on two more in the fifth on an RBI double from senior Jordan Selbach and a groundout from Lake.
The Eagles took a 5-0 lead in the sixth on a single from junior Jack Karras in the sixth that scored junior Dylan Eisner. Rhodes would battle back with a pair of runs in the seventh, but sophomore reliever Luke Emmett entered the game to get the final out in the inning. Sophomore Kyle Monk allowed just one hit in the final scoreless two innings, and worked around a bases-loaded situation in the ninth, to earn his first save of the year.
As a whole, the Eagles offense walked seven times in the game, and stole six bases.
Freshman Chip Capper, an Atlanta native, made his first career start for Rhodes, allowing just three hits in five innings, despite taking the loss to fall to 0-2.
Emory will wrap-up play at the tournament on Monday morning at 10:00 am against St. Joseph's College of Maine (0-2). The start of the game was moved up half an hour, with rain expected later in the day.
