Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not get the bats warmed up on a cold, damp evening at Red Murff Field as the Cru dropped a 5-1 decision to DeSales University Monday night in Belton. UMHB falls to 2-6 on the year with the loss. The Bulldogs even their record at 1-1 with the win.
DeSales put together two singles, a double steal and a passed ball to push across the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs added a run on a double steal attempt in the fifth and put three on the board in the top of the sixth. Danny Licamara and Mike Kacergis had sacrifice flies and Richie Lancashire added a run-scoring fielder's choice in that inning. UMHB scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Mazoch scored on a passed ball, but that was the only run the Cru could score after loading the bases with two outs. UMHB also left a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the eighth.
Stuart Hennigar took the loss for the Cru to drop to 0-1 on the year. Seven UMHB pitchers combined to scatter nine hits and strike out eight batters in the game. Dakota Parsons had two of the Cru's six hits in the game. Steven Wallace picked up the win for the Bulldogs after striking out eight, scattering six hits and allowing just an unearned run in six and two-thirds innings of work. Evan Fraser closed out the game to notch his first save. Tommy DePaul and Conner Lafferty had two hits apiece for DeSales.
The Cru will continue its home stand with a three-game conference series with Sul Ross State this weekend. The two teams will open the series with a 7:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
