DeRaad Homers Twice as Oxy Sweeps Caltech

LOS ANGELES — Devon DeRaad went 3 for 7 and left the yard twice, and Nolan Watson struck out seven as the Tigers swept the Caltech Beavers on Saturday at Anderson Field.

DeRaad finished the day with four RBIs, three runs scored, and struck out one batter in an inning of relief pitching. The sophomore is on fire this year, leading the SCIAC with seven home runs in just nine games.

The Tigers improve to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play.

Game 1: Occidental 8, Caltech 0

DeRaad opened the game with a solo shot in the top of the first inning to put the Tigers up 1-0.

Big Third Inning: Brady Fuller started the inning with a walk and then stole second to get into scoring position. Charlie Caccamo stepped up next, singling to right field to score Fuller. 

With the bases loaded, Caltech pitcher Daniel Chou threw a wild pitch in the dirt that allowed Caccamo to cross the plate. Designated hitter Victor Munoz singled to left scoring Johnathan Brooks, and Jake Chambers finished the inning with an RBI, scoring A.J. Libunao and putting the Tigers up 5-0.

The Tigers finished the inning with four runs scored on three hits.

In the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded, Brooks smacked a pitch into deep left field, tripling and scoring Caccamo, Ryan Fuhrman, and Chambers, extending Oxy's lead to 8-0.

Watson was dominant on the mound striking out seven in six innings of work with no runs scored.

Scott Ericksen recorded one strikeout in an inning of relief and Dean Abramson finished the last two innings with four strikeouts.

Game 2: Occidental 5, Caltech 2

Just like in the first game of the day, DeRaad got Oxy on the board first with a three-run shot in the bottom of the third that scored Caccamo and Brooks. Both Caccamo and Brooks singled to get on base.

In the top of the sixth with bases loaded and the Tigers leading 3-2, Will Nahmens stepped onto the mound for Oxy and forced Beaver center fielder Daniel Chou into a five-two-three double play, ending the Caltech threat.

The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Libunao doubled in Caccamo andJonathan Wong brought in DeRaad on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Next Game: The Tigers host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps next Friday at 2:30 pm.
