Union, N.J. (3/8/15) – The Kean University baseball team exploded for 12 runs in the nightcap, topping SUNY College at Old Westbury, 12-4, Sunday afternoon.
Sal Taormina continued his hot-hitting with a 2-for-2 performance with three walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Ryan Reitmeyer added two hits and three runs scored as Kean improved to 4-0 this season.
#7/15 Kean jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after two innings as senior Andy Lopez collected a two-out RBI double to plate the first run of the day. Taormina made it 2-0 after swiping home. Senior Anthony Fischetti added a single run in the second after reaching on a leadoff walk. He moved around the bases with two wild pitches sandwiched around a sacrifice.
The Cougars pushed the advantage out to six with three more runs in their half of the fifth. Taormina, junior Eric Fernandez and sophomore Scott Durkin all picked up RBI singles.
The Panthers (0-1) erased the shutout in the top of the sixth with three runs, all with two outs, including an RBI double by Christian Faust and an RBI single by Mike Cardino. Kean got the runs right back with three in the bottom half of the inning and paced their way to the win.
In all, 19 players saw action in the nightcap for Kean as Lopez, Durkin (pictured left), Taormina and Reitmeyer all tallied two hits. For the Panthers, Nick Yip had a multi-hit day with a triple.
Southpaw Christopher Rossi (1-0) earned the win. The rookie allowed one run and three hits in five plus innings of work. Fellow southpaw Richie Ferguson earned the save (1) after tossing four innings of relief with seven strikeouts.
These two teams will square off again tomorrow as schedule changes presented an opening date for both teams. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
