HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 7, 2015) – Junior Robert Robbins struck out eight batters over six innings while allowing only two hits to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Rutgers-Newark Saturday.
The Ducks improved to 2-0 with the victory while handing the Scarlet Raiders a loss in their season opener after having their previous three games canceled due to inclement weather.
Rutgers-Newark started the scoring off in the top of the second off a bobbled groundball which scored the leadoff batter, who reached on a walk. The Ducks answered in the bottom half when senior Nicholas Sieber led off with walk and advanced to third after a long double by sophomore Zeph Walters. Senior Gregg Nickels hit a chopper to the first basemen, and Sieber was able to dance around the tag and stretch a hand across the plate to score. After an RBI groundout by sophomore Garrett Wells, senior Marc Calleo hit a sacrifice fly to score Nickels.
The Scarlet Raiders got a run back in the top of the third off a homerun to right field by Chas Bohannon. That would be all the scoring for the game, as Robbins, senior Peirce Marston, and juniors Danny McIntyre and Ryan Patterson combined to allow only four more baserunners the rest of the contest.
Walters finished the afternoon 2-2 while also drawing two walks. Patterson pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his first save of the year, while Robbins recorded the win.
Andrew Nasti allowed three runs (three earned) over five innings and struck out three in the losing effort.
