Baseball Drops Final Game of Trip, 10-5, To Penn State-Berks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Scranton baseball team jumped out to a lead after three innings, but Penn State-Berks rallied in the final three innings to post a 10-5 victory in the Royals' final game of their southern trip on Sunday morning at the Ripken Experience.

Scranton (1-5) scored four times in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. Junior left fielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) had an RBI double and sophomore shortstop Patrick O'Dell (Harleysville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and freshman first baseman Patrick Mergel (Bethlehem Catholic/Bethlehem, Pa.) had RBI singles in the inning.

Penn State-Berks (1-0) scored twice in the fourth to get within one before the Royals pushed the lead to 5-3 on an RBI sac fly by freshman second baseman Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) in the bottom of the sixth. But the Lions scored four times in the top of the seventh and three more in the top of the ninth for the win.

O'Dell finished with a single, double and an RBI, senior outfielder Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) had two hits and scored a run, and freshman outfielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) tripled and scored a run in the loss.

The Royals return to action on Saturday, March 14, when they open Landmark Conference play with a doubleheader at Elizabethtown at 1 p.m. in Elizabethtown, Pa.
