LaGRANGE, Ga.—After going up 6-0 after six innings, the No. 7 Birmingham-Southern baseball team held off a late-game rally by LaGrange to win 6-5, Tuesday evening, and remain undefeated at 12-0 on the season.

LaGrange fell to 5-10 with the loss.

A two-run home run by senior Jacob Mayfield in the top of the first put the Panthers up 2-0. BSC added to its lead in the sixth after sophomore Sam Roberts led off with a triple and sophomoreJack Rhodes singled to center field to put the Panthers up 3-0. Two batters later, with two outs on the board, Rhodes stole second and senior Brandon Marino and junior Matt Brown walked load the bases. A single to right-center from junior Taylor McCracken plated Rhodes and Marino, and then, after a LaGrange pitching change, a Mayfield single brought Brown home to increase the lead to 6-0.

LaGrange made things interesting in the bottom half of the seventh, though, scoring four runs to cut it to 6-4, and then adding another in the bottom of the eighth to cut it to 6-5. Senior David Bourbonnais came in to pitch with the game-tying run on first and no outs, and, after a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second, Bourbonnais struck out the final two batters to preserve the lead.

BSC got one runner on base in the top of the ninth, but was unable to score. Bourbonnais came through again for BSC in the bottom of the ninth, retiring three straight batters to pick up his second save of the year.

Sophomore Stephen Himic (2-0) got the win, starting and going five innings with two strikeouts and three surrendered hits. Juniors Kyle Royalty and Miller Bonds also saw time on the mound before Bourbonnais moved from first base to the mound in the bottom of the eighth.

BSC recorded 12 hits, led by Mayfield going 3-5 with three RBI and McCracken going 3-5 with two RBI.

The Panthers return home this weekend, hosting Covenant College on Friday at 4 p.m. followed by another game against Covenant on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and then a game against Webster College at 4 p.m.
