ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's Prep) went 4 for 5 with a double, one run and one RBI to lead the 22nd-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team past New Paltz 7-1 Thursday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
Six R-MC pitchers combined to hold the Hawks (0-1) to six hits and one unearned run. Starter Nic Phelps (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) recorded the win, allowing three hits, no runs and no walks in two innings with one strikeout.
The Yellow Jackets (9-1) scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Sophomore Jordan Schmeer (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) had a leadoff walk in the first and scored on a fielder's choice by Michael Kroll to make it 1-0.
Sophomore Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) started the second with a double down the left field line and scored on a groundout by junior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) to raise the score to 2-0.
Meiners laced a leadoff double down the left field, stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Mitch Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) 1to up the lead to 3-0.
R-MC added three in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) ripped a leadoff single through the left side and moved to second on a one-out base hit by junior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River). Both runners advanced when Sanderson was hit by a pitch. Lodge scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Trentham and Sanderson both scored on an error as the Yellow Jacket advantage grew to 6-0.
After the Hawks avoided the shutout with a run in the top of the seventh, Meiners delivered an RBI single in the eighth to make the final 7-1.
Lodge and Brown both had two hits and a run. Brown's two hits were doubles.
Randolph-Macon was scheduled to host Washington and Lee in an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday, March 14. Due to expected wet conditions, that doubleheader has been moved to Sunday, March 15 at 12:30 p.m.
