#25 Bobcats Roll Past Southern Virginia

More news about: Frostburg State

BECKLEY, W. Va. – Enjoying the program's best start in recent history, the 25th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team pounded out a season-high 18 hits as the Bobcats rolled to their 10th-straight win, a 19-10 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Southern Virginia, Thursday afternoon.

Eight of the nine starters collected at least one hit for the Bobcats (10-0, 3-0 CAC) including seniors Kam Stewart and Ricky Brady who had three apiece. Stewart went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored while Brady was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and three runs.

After taking a 4-0 lead after the first two innings, the FSU offense really came alive and plated six runs in the top of the third to take a 10-0 advantage and never looked back. Senior Nick Walker, Brady and junior Zach Keeler strung together three-straight singles to open the frame and bring the first run across. After a Knight balk put runners on second and third with no outs, senior Lane Farmer walked to load the bases and chase SVU's starting pitcher, Colin Bigelow. Sophomore JT Tipton reached on fielder's choice that brought home Walker and record the first out of the inning. Senior Nick McElfish followed with a sac line drive to score Keeler and give FSU a 7-0 lead. Senior Zach Weiss was hit by a pitch and senior Ricky Castro singled to second base to load the bases for Stewart. The shortstop proceeded to clear the bags with a double to right center and push the Bobcat lead to 10-0.

Sophomore starting pitcher Ryan Callahan kept the Knights (1-5, 0-1 CAC) off the scoreboard for the next two innings after getting himself out of trouble in both the third and fourth inning. Farmer helped his starter out catching Saunders trying to take third in the third and Callahan induced a double play ball in the fourth to squash any rally the Knights were trying to put together.

The Bobcats added two more in the fourth and four in the fifth to push the lead to 16-0 before Southern Virginia scored its first run. The Knights put up four runs on four hits but left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth to cut the FSU lead to 16-4. After a one-out walk loaded the bases for Southern Virginia, Callahan struck out the next Knight and got Giovanni Prado to ground out to second to end the inning.

Frostburg followed with three runs in the top of the sixth to push the lead back to 19-4. Walker tripled to right center to score Stewart and junior Jamaal Windom before coming home on a single from junior Connor Cooper.

Southern Virginia scored the game's final six runs, one in both the bottom of the sixth and eighth before putting together a four-run ninth to cut the Bobcat lead back to single digits at 19-10. It was the first time this season the Bobcats have allowed double-digit runs to the opposing team and the fourth time this season the offense has scored in the double digits.

Callahan earned his first win of the season for FSU after going 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on six hits and striking out seven. Bigelow suffered the loss on the mound after lasting just 2.0 innings and giving up eight runs on six hits and three walks.

#25 Frostburg will take its 10-game winning streak to Newport News, Va. for a Saturday CAC doubleheader against Christopher Newport. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
