Hope Baseball Off To 2-0 Start After 18-4 Win Over Vassar

Senior Ben Pearson and junior Brady VanderWeele delivered three RBIs apiece to power the Hope College baseball team to an 18-4 win against Vassar in seven innings on Saturday in Auburndale, Florida.

The Flying Dutchmen improved to 2-0 on the season.

Hope never trailed after jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the top half of the first inning.

Pearson collected three hits in four at-bats. The third baseman from Madison, Wisconsin (West HS), also scored three times.

VanderWeele went 2-for-5 at the plate. The shortstop from Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS), also scored twice.

The Flying Dutchmen totaled 17 hits, including four doubles and 13 singles. Junior leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS), went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Four other Hope players had two hits apiece: senior second baseman Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), sophomore rightfielder JP Batts of Spring, Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS), junior designated hitter Luke Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), and freshman first baseman Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS).

Winning pitcher Austin Goodyke scattered nine hits and three runs over five innings. The junior from Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian HS), struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Hope returns to action on Monday, March 16. The Flying Dutchmen play Oswego State at 12:30 p.m. in Florida.
