Miller, Goulding Carry Hornets to Doubleheader Sweep

EMORY, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team got a complete game from David Goulding before Brandon Miller tied the school record for career wins in game two as the Hornets down Emory & Henry College 7-3 and 10-4 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday.

The win in game two was Miller's 23rd of his career, tying him for first on the Lynchburg leaderboard for wins in a career.

Lynchburg took advantage of defensive miscues by the Wasps in the first game, despite great pitching from E&H starter Aaron Sparks (1-2). The Wasp hurler surrendered four runs in seven innings, but only one was earned, as Lynchburg took a 4-3 lead.

The Hornets trailed early as Goulding surrendered three runs in the first as Brett Johnson and Jordan Woullard singled before a two-out Carson Bryant three-run homer put the home team in front.

Goulding (1-1) settled down from there, throwing 8 1/3 shutout frames after the homer for his first complete game in his second career start. He allowed 10 hits and one walk while striking out two, holding Emory & Henry to three runs. The freshman was effective on the mound, throwing 108 pitches on the afternoon.

The complete game was the first by a Hornet pitcher since Miller threw one in a 4-3 victory at Bridgewater College on April 19, 2014.

LC tied it up in the fifth inning with a pair of runs, capped off by a Drew Taylor RBI single. The Hornets took the lead for good in the seventh inning when back-to-back errors allowed Ryan Katona to score from third for the 4-3 lead.

Lynchburg scored three runs in the ninth on just one hit as LC took advantage of two passed balls, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Taylor went 3-for-5 with two RBI in the game one victory while Katona scored three runs.

LC took the early 2-0 lead in the second game heading into the fourth inning, but the Wasps clawed back into the contest with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth, prompting LC to turn to Miller out of the bullpen.

The senior held E&H down after the fifth inning, giving his hitters a chance to come back and take the lead. Miller (1-3) worked 5 1/3 innings while giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits without issuing a walk. He struck out five Wasps, throwing 79 pitches on the afternoon.

Lynchburg tied the contest at four in the sixth inning on a two-RBI double by Jonathan Munn that scored Wil Parsons and Joe Rogers. Parsons captured the lead for LC in the seventh on one swing with a long two-run homer to left-center.

Pat Harris added insurance in the ninth with a pinch-hit home run to center that scored Joe Tomasulo.

Ty Hill worked six innings for Emory & Henry (2-10/0-3 ODAC) and surrendered four runs, two earned, while striking out six.

Taylor ended 6-for-10 on the day for Lynchburg with four runs scored and two RBI. Rogers went 4-for-8 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Lynchburg (5-8/2-0) will travel for another ODAC game on Tuesday when the Hornets face Roanoke College (1-5/0-3) at 3 p.m.
