Sophomore rightfielder JP Batts of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS), collected six RBI over two games to power the Hope College baseball team to a 9-2 and 6-4 sweep of Grinnell, Iowa, on Tuesday in Winter Haven, Florida.

The Flying Dutchmen rebounded from their first loss of the season to raise their overall record to 4-1.

In the first game, Batts went 4-for-4 with a run-scoring single, a RBI double and a two-run triple. His second-inning single knocked in junior shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS), to cap a four-run rally that broke open a scoreless tie.

Senior second baseman Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), delivered a two-run single in the second and a RBI single in the fifth. He went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Winning pitcher Currey Thomas of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville HS), scattered seven hits and two runs over six innings. Thomas (1-0) struck out six and walked one.

In the second game, Hope scored three times in the top of the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie.

Batts drove home sophomore centerfielder Jack Twitty of Rochester, Michigan (Adams HS), with a single, moved to third on a run-scoring single from junior designated hitter Alex Arthurs of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), that plated VanderWeele and scored on a fielder's choice for junior leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS).

Batts had a RBI single in a two-run third that drove home Schaefers and eventually scored on Arthurs single.

Junior reliever Matt Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), picked up the win after allowing three hits and one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings. Glowacki (2-0) walked one.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday with a nine-inning game against Babson, Massachusetts at noon.
