Keystone Caps 2-0 Day With Win Over 24th Ranked Johns Hopkins

Fort Myers, FL – Keystone College's baseball team rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning of Tuesday's opener over Plattsburgh State University to walk off with a 4-3 victory before earning a 9-2 victory over Johns Hopkins University, currently ranked 24th in the country, to complete a 2-0 day in Florida.  The Giants will take a 6-2 record into the final day of their spring break trip following their two wins today.
 
In Tuesday's opener against Plattsburgh State (5-5), the Cardinals opened the scoring in the top of the second inning on an RBI groundout before taking a 2-0 lead in the visitor's third on an RBI single by Alex Rodriguez.  Keystone got a run back in the bottom of the third inning as Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) doubled to right field to drive in Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ).
 
Plattsburgh State restored a two-run advantage in the top half of the fifth inning by taking advantage of a fielding error by the Giants.  Keystone cut their deficit back to a single-run in the seventh inning when Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) doubled home Eduardo Familia (Bronx, NY/Collegio Utesianode Estudios Integrados) to set the stage for a dramatic bottom of the ninth inning.
 
Keystone put their first two runners on base in the home ninth and tied the game on an error by the Cardinals on a bunt by Familia that allowed Kevin Luciano (Everett, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) to score the tying run.  A sacrifice bunt by Bzozowski put runners on second and third before Corl was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs.  Reyes then drew a free pass of his own that allowed Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) to walk home with the game-winning run.
 
Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) improve to 2-0 on the season by tossing a complete game for Keystone, striking out five batters while yielding the Cardinals' three runs – two of which were earned.
 
The Giants got hits from six different players and also drew five free passes to win despite getting outhit 14-6 in the contest with Reyes earning a pair of RBIs.
 
Plattsburgh State starter Brandon Buksa allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five batters in eight innings of work while Mike Vargues and Andrew Kramer unable to secure the win for the Cardinals in the final innings.
 
Nicholas Lupo went 4-5 for Plattsburgh State while four other players recorded a pair of hits each in the loss.
 
In Tuesday's second game against Johns Hopkins (5-2), who defeated the Giants 9-4 on Monday afternoon, the Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead when Conor Reynolds scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning before doubling their lead in the visitor's third as Jake Rodgers came home on a Colin McCarthy base hit.
 
Keystone leveled the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning with Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) hitting a two-run single up the middle to plate Corl and Joe Angelucci (Commack, NY/Commack)Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) then gave the Giants a 3-2 edge in the home fourth with an RBI groundout to second the brought home Bzozowski with the go-ahead run.
 
Keystone pushed their lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning as Rojas came home on an RBI groundout to third base off the bat of Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) before adding five runs in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.  Ross scored the first run of the frame on a passed ball, Bzozowski scored on a Lanfrano single, and Corl drove in Angelucci with an RBI groundout to make it a 7-2 game.  Lanfranco would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from Rojas before Herceg doubled home Muccio with the game's final run.
 
Keystone starter Hector Vargas (Queens, NY/Forest Hills) improved to 2-0 on the season after going six innings and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four batters.  Jack Simons (Great Falls, VA/Bullis School) allowed one hit in two scoreless innings before turning the ball over to Josh Zilla (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore), who struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning while making his collegiate debut.
 
Lanfranco finished the game 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Rojas drove in three runs and also scored a run, while Herceg also collected a pair of RBIs to pace the Giants' offense in the nightcap.
 
Johns Hopkins starter Colin Friedman suffered the loss after surrendering six runs on four hits in 5.0 innings on the mound while the Blue Jays' bullpen was charged with three runs on four hits over the final three innings.
 
Keystone will close out their spring break trip on Wednesday with a pair of games in Fort Myers.  The Giants will take on the University of Dubuque at 9:00 a.m. following by a meeting with St. Lawrence University that is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
