Late Rally Sets Tone as Marlins Sweep LC Baseball

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Virginia Wesleyan College baseball team came back from a 6-1 deficit to win the first game of Sunday's doubleheader 7-6, before using that momentum to run away with game two 7-3 in a crucial Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup.

The Hornets jumped out to a quick start when Lincoln Evans connected on his second career homer and first of the season for a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Virginia Wesleyan tied it up in the third, but Jay Kenyon drove in a run in the fourth before Joe Rogers added one more in the fifth in front of a two-RBI triple by Wil Parsons that made it 5-1 heading to the sixth.

Kenyon collected his second RBI of the game in the seventh when he worked a bases loaded walk. Riley Koonce entered for the Marlins and got Will Hylton out on a deep fly ball to right field to end the damage, stranding the bases loaded.

Lynchburg looked to have all the momentum, riding ace David Goulding well into the eighth inning. He finished with six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of work while allowing a pair of runs on six hits and three walks.

Trailing 6-2 after picking up a lone run in the eighth, the Marlins pieced together four hits and took advantage of two hit by pitches to plate five runs for their first lead of the game. The bench had a huge impact for VWC as Scott Montgomery, Brian Pfund, and Trey Hanchey (substitutions from the seventh innings) all singled with no outs to start the rally.

Koonce (2-1) picked up the win in game one for the Marlins after working 1 1/3 innings of one-hit ball.

The second game belonged to the Marlins as Taylor Erby started the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run homer over the left field wall. A triple by Zach Bach in the subsequent at bat forced the Hornets to go to the bullpen after just one out.

Bach scored on a groundout to make it 3-0 where the score stayed until Justin Erby singled home Hanchey to make it 4-0.

Lynchburg cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles from Ryan Katona and Joe Tomasulo, giving the fans hope of an LC rally in game two. That would be all for naught though as VWC pulled back ahead 6-2 in the very next inning.

Taylor Erby went 4-for-8 on the day for Virginia Wesleyan (7-4/7-1 ODAC) with four RBI and a run scored to help move the Marlins into a tie for first place in the conference. Nick Bay and Sean Greiser (2-1) combined to strike out 10 Hornets, five each, in seven innings of work in game two.

Lynchburg was led by Tomasulo who had four hits on the afternoon. Brandon Miller pitched 6 2/3 innings out of the bullpen in game two. He allowed three runs, all unearned, on 10 hits while striking out seven and not issuing a walk.

Lynchburg (5-12/2-3) travels to Guilford College (5-14/2-8) Tuesday at 3 p.m. as both teams look to find their winning ways.
