Faber Drives in 5, Kuchar Dominates in Debut as Union sweeps Westminster

WINTER HAVEN, FL. - Junior Jamie Faber drove in five runs over two games and freshman Ryan Kuchar struck out 11 batters over six innings in his pitching debut as Union swept Westminster 9-7 and 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Dutchmen had two separate comebacks in game one, scoring eight times over the 5th and 6th innings to earn a 9-7 win over the Blue Jays. After tying the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the fifth, Westminster scored three times in sixth to make it 7-4 which chased starter Jake Vesling from the contest.

The Dutchmen bounced back in the bottom of the frame, crossing the plate five times. Freshman Matt Drum got on with an error to begin the inning followed by an Andy Labeck singled to right. Zack Twitchell sacrificed both runners over to give Union a second and third opportunity with just one out. Junior Jeffery Grasso Jr. delivered as he drove a double to deep left center driving in both runs to it 7-6. Chris Carbone followed with an RBI single to tie the game.Anders Goetz drove in the go-ahead run on a single before coming around to score on a Faber double.

Faber went 3-for-4 in the game with four RBIs to lead the "U." His second three-hit game in four contests.

Bill Christopher came on in the seventh, allowing one hit, striking out two and walking one to pick up his first career save.

In game two, Kuchar completely stiffled the Westminster hitters as the freshman carried a perfect game into the sixth inning. The Blue Jays broke through however in the sixth, scoring once on three hits. Kuchar finished with 11 strikeouts and no walks to pick up his first career win in Garnet and White.

The Dutchmen did all their damage in the third inning with RBIs from Grasso, Labeck, Faber and Jake Fishman.

Faber was the lone Dutchmen to notch two base hits in the second game and collected five hits total in the two games. He now has at least one hit in five straight games after going hitless in the opener.

Union will be back in action tomorrow with a single game against Kalamazoo. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
