GRANVILLE, Ohio — Senior third baseman Ryan Hanahan tied a pair of school records in Marietta College's 19-1 non-conference baseball victory over Denison University Wednesday (March 25) evening. Hanahan was a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate equaling the school record for hits in a game. He also tied the mark for doubles in a game with three.

Pioneer leadoff hitter Tim McCoy set the tone for the day as he deposited the second pitch of the game over the right field fence for a solo home run. It was his second home run of the season.

Denison (6-5 overall) took advantage of a Marietta error to score an unearned run in the bottom of the first to even the score at 1-1. Neither team scored in the second inning but the floodgates opened in the top of the third.

Marietta (10-5 overall) scored six runs in the third and added five more in the fourth for a commanding 12-1 lead. The Express continued to roll adding one in the fifth, four in the sixth and two more in the seventh. All told, Marietta scored 19 runs on 18 base hits including nine for extra bases.

Sophomore Tyler Nieberding (2-0) was the beneficiary of that offensive firepower. Nieberding worked 4.0 innings and allowed just one unearned run on two hits. He struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Mike Fulton, Ian Luttrell, Mitch McNabb and Derek Varner all threw in relief for the Pioneers.

Ryan Mulligan (0-2) started on the mound for Denison and pitched 2.2 innings before being chased from the game. Mulligan was charged with seven runs, only two earned, on four hits. Four other Big Red pitchers saw action in the game.

Hanahan doubled in the second and third innings, tripled in the fourth and then singled in the sixth inning. He tied the doubles record with an infield double in the seventh when his major league pop up was lost in the lights and fell safely in the infield. His record-tying sixth base hit was a single up the middle in the ninth.

Hanahan becomes the fifth Pioneer to notch six hits in a game. Ken Laveck did it in 1975, followed by John Schaly (1982), Monte Duncan (1985) and Chris Tekulve (2000). He is 31st Pioneer to record three doubles in a single game.

McCoy, Mitch Geers and Austin Harvey each finished with three hits in the game. Harvey, in just his first career start, blasted a two-run home run in the seventh and drove in four runs on the night.

The Pioneers were scheduled to play at Washington and Jefferson College at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. But, due to the weather forecast, the game has been postponed until Friday (March 27) at 4:00 p.m.
