Hope Baseball Trades Shutouts With Calvin, Splits MIAA Doubleheader

Starter Jake Chipka and two relievers combined on a six-hit shutout to help the Hope College baseball team salvage a split with visiting Calvin on Thursday.

The Flying Dutchmen won Game 2 by a 9-0 margin at Boeve Stadium after losing the opener 7-0.

Chipka (1-2) scattered four hits over five innings in the MIAA contest. The junior righthander from Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS), struck out four.

Freshman Ryan Wysocki of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern HS) and junior Matt Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Hope jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Calvin. The Flying Dutchmen received a two-run double from first baseman Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), capitalized on two Calvin errors for three unearned runs.

Junior shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS), led Hope's five-hit attack with two hits, including a RBI single.

In the opener, the Flying Dutchmen were no-hit for 5 1/3 innings before senior second baseman Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), singled off starter Nate Schepers. Hope finished with two hits.

Hope is now 8-5 overall and 3-3 in MIAA play.

The Flying Dutchmen complete their series with Calvin (4-10, 1-5 MIAA) on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
