Wayne, N.J. - In a non-conference baseball game at William Paterson on Thursday afternoon, Farmingdale State fell, 6-3. The Rams now stand at 2-8 on the season, while the Pioneers improved to 12-2.
Farmingdale State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as senior shortstop Tom Rydzewski (Franklin Square, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error which allowed sophomore third baseman Nick Osburn (East Islip, N.Y.) to score.
In the top of the fourth, senior right fielder Michael Marino (Franklin Square, N.Y.) led off with a double and advanced to third on an Osburn sacrifice bunt. After a Rams strikeout, senior left fielder Anthony Alvino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) hit a 2-out RBI double to right center to put Farmingdale State ahead, 2-0.
In the bottom of the inning, the Pioneers cut the deficit to 2-1 on a Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J.) RBI double to right center. In their next at-bat, an AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J.) RBI single tied the game at 2-2.
William Paterson added a run in the fifth and sixth inning to increase their advantage to 4-2.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Osburn hit an RBI single up the middle which scored Rydzewski and pulled the Rams within one, 4-3.
The Pioneers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth as they earned the 6-3 non-conference victory.
Alvino was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in, while Marino and Rydzewski each had a hit and scored a run for Farmingdale State. Junior pitcher Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.) recorded the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
William Paterson was led by freshman third baseman Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J.) who was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman pitcher Corey Martinez (River Edge, N.J.) earned the win after allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out four in seven innings.
The Rams open Skyline Conference play on Saturday, March 28th when they head to St. Joseph's for a doubleheader starting at noon.
