Baseball Splits League Opener Against RPI Behind Fishman's Gem

AUBURNDALE, FL. - The Union College baseball team opened up the Liberty League portion of their schedule with a doubleheader split with RPI on Friday afternoon. The Dutchman took the first game 5-0 before falling in the second contest, 18-2.

Sophomore Jake Fishman bounced back after taking his first career loss in his last outing in superb fashion. Fishman struck out 11 Engineers over seven innings, walking just two and giving up five hits. It is his second career complete game shutout.
 

Union got on the board in the third as Kent Curran singled inAnders Goetz with two outs after Goetz got on via a walk.

The Dutchmen padded their lead in the fourth inning, scoring three times. Jamie Faber led off with a single followed by an Eric Egan single with 1 out. Jeffery Grasso Jr. followed with a single to load the bases with one out. CJ Worley brought home Faber on a suicide squeeze. Egan and Grasso came across the play as Jake Vesling reached base on a throwing error by the RPI third basemen.
The Garnet and White provided the final run in the 7th as Fishman got his 3rd hit of the game followed by a walk to Curran. Faber sacrificed runners to 2nd and 3rd and.Fishman came around to score on a base running error by Curran.

In game two, it was all Engineers as Union pitchers combined to walk seven and hit three batters en route to the 18-2 defeat. Greg Geisel took the loss for the Dutchman after allowing six runs over 2 1/3 innings of work. Greg Echeveria threw a complete game for RPI to earn the win.

Faber grounded out to second in his lone at bat of the game to see his team-high six game hitting streak snapped.

These two teams will be back in action tomorrow as they wrap up their season series with a doubleheader starting at noon.
