Berry baseball wins season-opener vs. Guilford

ROME, Ga. – The Berry College baseball team won its season-opener over Guilford College, 2-1, on Friday.

Berry advanced to 1-0, and the Quakers dropped to 0-1.

Pitcher Ben Jernigan got the win for the Vikings. He pitched five innings, earned three strikeouts, and limited the Quakers to two hits. Braxton Teal also came in the seventh inning, collecting a strikeout and the save for Berry.

In the bottom of the first inning, Alex McGill hit a SAC fly out to right field, scoring Dusty Tyson. The Vikings scored again in the bottom of the sixth frame when Jernigan advanced to second base and Alfred Francis scored on a balk.

In the top of the seventh inning, Guilford's Charles Noble reached first on a fielder's choice and earned an RBI. Nathan Fulbright was out at second base to the shortstop, scoring Logan Jones.

BC's Alex McGill and Hunter White earned two hits each. Berry's Ryan Smith and Tyson also had a hit.

The Quakers' Drew Crawford received the loss and collected two strikeouts. 

The Vikings play Guilford on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Berry's William R. Bowdoin Field.
