AUSTIN, Texas – Cameron Cox struck out 11 in 8.2 innings and led the Concordia University Texas baseball team to an 8-3 win over Trinity on Friday night at Tornado Field.

Cox, who improved to 8-0 on the year with the victory, scattered seven hits and allowed three runs while coming just one out short of his seventh complete game of the season.

He was backed up by a Tornados offense that collected 11 hits.

Luke Kress was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs, while Race Mellman and Cole Calder each posted two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Garrett Benyo added a pair of knocks, including a double, while Gareth Hutton drove in two on a single in the seventh.

The Tornados (21-6) held a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, but plated three runs to extend their advantage to 5-1.

A frame later, CTX plated two more after an error prolonged the seventh.

The Tornados scratched across one final run in the eighth, as Calder drove in Kress on a double to right field.

The Tigers (19-9) managed to load the bases before Cox exited the game and scored two runs with reliever Justin Traxler on the mound.

Zack Speer (5-2) was handed the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits in five-plus innings of work. The right-hander also logged four strikeouts.

Concordia Texas will return to action on Friday, April 10, at Howard Payne.
