Faber Homers Twice; Fishman, Kuchar Shut Down Raptor Bats in Friday Sweep

More news about: Union

ANNADALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Union defeated Bard College 4-1 and 11-0 on Friday afternoon behind stellar performances on the mound by sophomore Jake Fishman and freshman Ryan Kuchar. Junior Jamie Faber continued to stay hot at the plate, homering once in each contest and driving in a total of four runs for the Dutchmen on the day.

Another start, another complete game for Fishman in game one as he went the distance for the third consecutive start this season. He struck out 11 batters for the second straight outing while allowing just one run on four hits in his seven innings of work. Fishman lowered his ERA to a league-leading 0.90.

The Dutchmen got off to quick start in the top of the first as Faber launched his first career home run on the first pitch he saw over the right field fence. After a single to right center from Kent CurranEric Egan drove the first pitch he saw to the left center gap for an RBI triple to make it 2-0 Union.

In the third inning, the Dutchmen added a run on a sac fly from Faber to bring home Jake Vesling. Union tacked on one more in the top half of the sixth as Andy Labeck singled home Egan and ball hit to left.

Bard finally broke through against Fishman in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Carafotes. The run was the first time the Raptors scored against Fishman in 12.1 career innings. Fishman no hit Bard over seven innings last season.

In game two, Kuchar picked up his second career win, scattering five hits over seven shutout innings. He punched out four while issuing three free passes. Faber came on to record the final six outs for the Dutchmen. He did not allow a hit and struck out four compared to one walk. It was Faber's first appearance on the mound since May 12, 2013 as the junior righthander missed all of last season due to Tommy John Surgery.

Egan drove in Curran on a single to right in the second and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. An inning later in the third, Faber and Fishman both had RBI singles as Union doubled their lead to 4-0.

Following another run in the sixth from an RBI double off the bat of Labeck, the Dutchmen opened up the game with five runs in the top of the 7th to increase their lead to 9-0. Fishman brought home Anders Goetz and Faber on a single to left. Egan followed with a two-run triple, his third three-bagger of the game and fourth on the day. He was able to score on the play because of an error by the shortstop.

Faber connected for his second home run of the day in the top of the eighth to provide the 11-0 final margin.

Union and Bard will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader starting at noon. The games will be played at Honey Field on Bard's campus because of the field conditions at Central Park.
