Providence, R.I.-Senior pitcher Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) and junior pitcherRyan O'Dell (Lincoln, RI) each tossed complete games as the Rhode Island College baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Little East Conference rival Keene State, 17-3 and 11-1, at Anchorman field on Friday afternoon.
The Anchormen (10-4, 2-0 LEC) raise their unbeaten streak to five games with the victories.
Freshman second baseman Shaun Vigeant (Coventry, RI) went 6-for-10 on the day with five RBI, while senior right fielder Pat Rogers (Waterford, CT) went 5-for-8 with one RBI.
The Owls (6-10, 0-2) scored the first three runs of game one, but it went downhill from there. Senior third baseman Tanner Chase (York, ME) and sophomore first basemanTrevor Chapin (Northfield, NH) each smacked RBI doubles, while freshman designated hitter Kolby Reggione (Pomfret, CT) contributed an RBI single.
The Anchormen broke the game open in the second inning with nine runs. Two errors fueled the offensive output, highlighted by a three-run homer by junior catcher Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA). Rogers followed Foley's blast with a bomb of his own.
RIC tacked on eight additional runs in the third, which led to the game being halted in the seventh due to the 10-run rule. Junior left fielder Joe Yankee (Lincoln, RI) ripped a two-run double in the frame.
Cummiskey settled down after the first and did not surrender a run the rest of the way. He allowed just six hits and struck out four in seven innings of work to earn his third (3-0) win. KSC junior starter Julian Haddad (Mount Kisko, NY) took the loss (1-2), allowing nine runs, only four of which were earned, on seven hits in two innings of work.
Game two saw a pitchers duel through the first four innings, with O'Dell holding a slim, 2-1, advantage over Owls sophomore right-hander Michael Crimi (Bethel, CT).
The Anchormen used a five-run fifth inning to take control of the game. The Anchormen had already scored two runs when a Foley single drove in Yankee to make the score 5-1 in the host's favor. Senior third baseman Tyler Santaniello (Cumberland, RI)smacked a two-run double down the right field line to complete the scoring in the stanza.
The Anchormen bats erupted again in the seventh inning as RIC scored four runs on four hits. Rogers led off the inning by doubling, than reached third on a throwing error. Santaniello reached on a fielder's choice with Rogers being thrown out at the plate.
Following a hit batsman, junior shortstop Gian Abbruzzese (North Providence, RI)knocked a single to load the bases. Vigeant singled to drive in two runs and a double by freshman center fielder Brad Douglas (Wakefield, RI) knocked in two more to give the Anchormen the, 11-1, seven-inning victory.
O'Dell (1-0) went seven innings, gave up five hits and one run while striking out nine. Crimi (2-1) went 4.1 innings, gave up five hits and four runs, three of which were earned, and struck out four batters.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play with a doubleheader at home against UMass Boston on Saturday, April 4 (noon).
