Vikes split SAA DH at Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Berry College split a conference baseball doubleheader at Birmingham-Southern on Saturday. The Panthers captured game one, 6-2, while the Vikings prevailed in the nightcap, 2-0.

BC is now 13-10 and 5-3 in Southern Athletic Association play. The Panthers, ranked fifth in the D3baseball.com national poll, moved to 17-3 and 7-1 in the SAA.

In the second game, Berry got a complete-game shutout for Ryan O'Connell. He improved to 1-2 on the season after scattering 3 hits in the 7-inning game.

The Vikings had a total of 10 hits in the game. Alfred Francis and McTier Mosley both collected 2 hits. 

In the first game, BSC's Blake Stephens tossed a complete game gem to lead the Panthers in the 6-2 result. He struck out 8, allowed 3 hits and improved to 5-0 on the season.

Berry's Ben Jernigan started and was pinned with the defeat. He gave up all 6 runs (5 earned), 12 hits and fell to 4-2.

Matt Brown went 3-5 with 2 RBI to lead the Panthers' offense. Ryan Smith collected 2 of BC's 3 hits.

The teams play the rubber match of the 3-game series on Sunday.
