Mitchell Powers Past Daniel Webster in Doubleheader Sweep

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team took the first two games of its New England Collegiate Conference series against Daniel Webster College on Saturday, winning by final scores of 15-0 and 16-3 at Alumni Field. 

Kenneth Olszewski went 7-for-10 with a double, triple and four RBI in the doubleheader to lead the Mariners (12-2 overall, 5-0 NECC) at the plate. Starting pitchers Al Jordan Johnson and Tyler Shamas each logged 6.0 innings and picked up wins to improve to 3-0 on the season. 

The two teams will complete the series with a nine-inning contest at Mitchell on Monday, April 6 at 1 p.m.

Game 1 – Mitchell 15, Daniel Webster 0

The Mariners scored runs in each of the first five innings en route to victory. A two-run double by Ryan Goodwin highlighted a four-run first inning, and Mitchell tacked on another three runs in the second to go up 7-0. Tyler Pina plated a run with a triple in the third and later scored on a ground out by Peter McTernan, and Rafael Garcia capped a two-run fourth with a RBI double to left field. In the fifth inning, a triple by Evan Peck drove in a pair of runs while Goodwin added a RBI single and the lead swelled to 15-0.

Johnson worked out of jams in the first two innings but quickly settled into a groove. He yielded only four hits and struck out one before turning the ball over to Domenick Giaramida for the final three outs.

Nine different players finished with a hit for the Mariners. Olszewksi went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Goodwin also knocked in three runs with three hits. 

Dan Quinn had two of DWC's four hits while Dan Ierardi recorded a double. Eagles starter Ariel Ramos went 4.0 innings and gave up 11 runs (eight earned) on nine hits and struck out three.

Game 2 – Mitchell 16, Daniel Webster 3

Mitchell jumped out to another quick lead with a five-run first inning in the nightcap. The Mariners pounded out five hits in the frame that included RBI doubles from Neftali Arroyo, Garcia and McTernan as well as a RBI triple by Olszewski.

A four-run fourth inning bumped the Mitchell lead to 10-1 as Pina delivered a bases-clearing single with two outs to provide the big blow. In the bottom of the frame, the Eagles got Shamas for two runs on a double to right-center by Kyle Hodgdon.

The Mariners added six runs over the final three innings to pad the lead, though Shamas wouldn't need the extra run support. He finished his day with six strikeouts and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits. Daniel Webster starter Jared Maloney lasted 3.2 innings and gave up 10 runs (nine earned) on nine hits and struck out two.
