No. 9 Shenandoah Sweeps Virginia Wesleyan

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 9 Shenandoah University took over first place in the ODAC baseball standings by sweeping Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (16-4-1, 12-2 ODAC) won game one 16-7 before finishing off the sweep with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap over the Marlins (10-4, 9-4).

Junior Michael Scimanico improved to 5-0 with the game two win - Scimanico struck out six and allowed the two runs on nine hits and one walk in seven innings of work.

Ryan Mossman, who started in right field and went 1 for 3 at the plate, recorded the final six outs for his second save of the season.

Mossman allowed one hit, but that runner was erased on a game-ending 6-3 double play.

SU had a total of 29 hits in the sweep with 11 coming in game two.

With the game tied at 1-1 heading into the sixth, Shenandoah pulled away with two runs in each of its final three at-bats.

In the sixth, J.J. McDaniel beat out a two-out infield single on which Billy Arens and Ricky Pardoscored from third and second, respectively.

Pardo's run was unearned as the throw from reliever Riley Koonce was off line and allowed Pardo to come all the way around from second.

Pardo's run also made a loser of VWC starter Alex Tucci (1-1). Tucci allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings.

Arens, with three hits, and McDaniel, with two, led the SU offense.

Shenandoah scored two runs in the second, third and fifth innings before putting up a nine-spot in the seventh inning of game one to coast home to the win.

Junior Darrell Thompson (3-1) was sharp, striking out eight in 7.0 innings of work and allowing two unearned runs on seven hits.

Matthew WilsonBrandon Duarte and Phillip Morse finished up with Wilson and Morse each getting one strikeout.

McDaniel had a 4 for 5 contest that included three runs scored while designated hitter Nolan Overbydrove in five hits and had three hits.

Mossman had three RBI and Joe Coleman was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored from the No. 9 spot in the order.

Seven of nine starters in the SU lineup had at least one hit.

Shenandoah is back in action on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. ODAC contest against Bridgewater.
