Junior transfer Dominic Reed got his first Tommie pitching victory as No. 10-ranked St. Thomas ran its win streak to six with a 4-2, 10-inning victory over Gustavus in MIAC baseball play Wednesday in St. Peter.

Game two was halted by darkness after five innings with St. Thomas leading 3-2. The seven-inning game will be completed, perhaps as soon as Thursday.

The Tommies (14-5 overall, 6-1 MIAC), improved to 4-1 this season in extra-inning games. They had two relievers work out of four late jams in game one:

  • they stranded the bases loaded in the sixth;
  • they left two GAC runners on base in the seventh;
  • they froze the winning run on third base with two outs in the ninth;
  • and with a 4-2 lead in the 10th, they stranded the tying and potential winning runs on base.

UST went ahead in the top of the 10th inning on an RBI double by freshman Jimmy Dolan and got an insurance run on sophomore Ben Carpenter's RBI single. Carpenter has had three MIAC plate appearances and has singled each time, the last two driving in runs in extra innings.

Junior ace Eric Veglahn came on to pitch to three batters in the bottom of the 10th in a rare save opportunity. He walked the first to load the bases but earned the save by closing with a strikeout and a game-ending ground out.

UST starter Colin Wendinger fell behind 2-1 in the first inning has he issued three walks and allowed a two-run single. But he retired 15 of his next 17 as he allowed no runs, one hit and one walk and pitched into the sixth inning.

Reed, a junior transfer making his fifth appearance but first out of the pen, worked 3 2-3 innings of scoreless relief as he allowed two hits and four walks. he squared his record at 1-1 and lowered his earned-run average to 1.88.

St. Thomas outhit the Gusties 10-4. Anthony Winters had a solo home run in the first inning and walked and scored the tying run in the sixth. Ryan Gerber had three hits.

UST scored three early runs in game two, keyed by Brady Johnson's two-run single. The Gusties loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and pulled within 3-2 on a one-out wild pitch. But Ty Feyereisen escaped with a ground out and strikeout to keep the Toms ahead through five innings.
